August 31st

I don't know what is going on but my phone just corrected August to "Tau gust" and that sense. Ah yes, a gust of one of the finer Greek letters!

I am super excited for this weekend. I am also super excited for MAGFest, but that's like six months away still.

I just want to watch all of Avatar and Legend of Korra and Steven Universe again okay?

August 29th

So I'm going to work at 8:00 tonight and I'll be there til midnight. Aaand then I have to be at work at 7:00 AM tomorrow. So you all know I'm gonna get like no sleep tonight. That'll be fun. But then I have some days off and then Brad is coming to visit and I'm so excited! Whee!

August 28th

I'm loving The Last Unicorn. What an eloquently written book. I'm probably going to stay up super late reading it, to be honest.

And speaking of eloquent things, I stumbled across this quote and I really just love it. It's not a happy quote, and should not be taken as any sort of metaphor for things in my life right now, it just happened to roll across my Tumblr dashboard today.

"I give you bitter pills in sugar coating. The pills are harmless; the poison is in the sugar." - Stanisław Lec

P.S. Stanisław has been one of my favorite Polish names for years because it's one of my favorite examples of of "those letters aren't supposed to make those sounds" and it's great. (In Polish, ł is pronounced like a w and w is pronounced like an f. So it's like Staneeswahf.)

August 27th

Sorry for the onslaught of short and sappy posts lately. It's been one of those weeks! Ohio was absolutely incredible. Yes, Ohio. I went to Ohio several times a year as a child, as that's where my grandpa and great-aunt lived. They lived down in Dayton though, and so in my mind, all of Ohio was like Dayton. Flat, quaint, and a bit boring. As it turns out, Columbus is a fantastic city. It's small but alive, and it has a very subtle energy to it. It's not like New York or even Minneapolis in terms of energy. It's quietly energetic, but it is definitely there. It's scenic, too, and there's so much history that seems to still exist among the modernities. It's a bit juxtaposing in itself, but it's very charming. I really enjoyed my time there, and I'd certainly go back!

Now, a brief fragrance review, because this is a scent I've wanted to try for months and months and finally got a sample of and...well, I actually kind of hate it.

"The intimacy of the night: Infinite tenderness becomes ecstasy. Live a moment of sublime intimacy... Cedar, surrounded by soothing notes of hot milk and caramel, gives way to a powerful burst of gunpowder, and orchid. An explosion of love, beyond time and place."

Gunpowder and caramel. It looked like such an amazing combination of notes, I love the story behind it, and I typically love scents by L'artisan. But this one was not destined to be. My skin projected only a strange odor of pickles, with an occasional hint of cedar. Clearly something in my skin chemistry doesn't agree with this one. A lot of people seem to get a wonderful smoky caramel from this, which is exactly what I wanted. However, another reviewer on Fragrantica got the pickle smell, and it seems she and I are simply not meant for this scent. I have a number of new samples to try though, so hopefully I'll fall in love with one of them.

August 25th

I miss Brad. A lot. It's nice to be home and all but I'd rather just be there. I still can't believe how lucky I am to know him, let alone get to call him my boyfriend. We met in the unlikeliest of ways and I just feel so happy about it all. I really and truly love him so much.

August 24th

I am in love with Columbus. What a wonderful city to spend time in with such a wonderful person. I am happy.

August 23rd

It's my last night here with Brad for awhile now and I'm super sad! We had such an amazing day today! We went to the mall, and had amazing German food for dinner, and explored and had lots of fun. I even tried some new perfume at Sephora, haha. I am going to miss Brad so much! I love that boy so much. Gotta get up at 4:30 AM! Plane doesn't leave until 9:40 but Brad has to be at work at 6:30 so I'm getting dropped off bright and early at the airport! Woohoo, mornings at the airport!

August 22nd

Brad and I went on a safari today! It was so much fun! We then had our traditional Subway dinner and now we're sleepy. It was a good day though! Lots of driving!

August 21st

I'm in Ohio! I am very tired! I couldn't sleep last night, and traveling tires me out as it is. But I am happy to be here with Brad!

August 20th

Hi friends! Work was indeed super long today! And of course I fell asleep when I got home and haven't started packing yet. Good thing I don't need to pack too much!

So excited to see Brad! So excited for a flight less than eight hours! And no customs! No passport! Such easy travel!

August 19th

Hmm. Still hmm.

Tomorrow is going to be a long work day. I'm grateful for the money, but damn. Getting up early and getting home late is so...blah. I've seriously been dreading this shift for like two weeks now. Anything more than eight hours just drains me.

On the plus side, I'm off to Ohio in less than 48 hours!

August 18th

Hmm. Still feeling a bit off. Lots of life stresses right now. And Cas almost choked today. And work was crazy. This week is a lot of week for just seven days.

I'm wearing my mini Chanel Lef Exclusifs Beige and I'm simultaneously happy and sad that I don't like it. It looked like it would smell good (honey and frangipani!) but it's kinda mediocre. Maybe that's why it's called Beige.

August 17th

Tonight is a strange night. I had a super chill day, went and saw many kitties at PetSmart, bought groceries, and now I'm at home and in a weird mood. Luckily I don't work until noon tomorrow so I at least can sleep a bit. Then tomorrow night I gotta start packing for Ohio! Not that it'll take long to pack since I'm just bringing a carry-on.

I was naughty and bought some perfume. Don't tell anyone okay? :o

August 16th

Who's ready for a bunch of perfume reviews? (I'll keep them brief!)

Caligna is a fig perfume that I can actually get behind. I'm not typically a fan of fig scents in general, but I've found that most fig scents contain both figs and fig leaves, and often coconut as well. I'm not a fan of that combo. Caligna, however, offers a different take on figs. Its primary note is fig, but it also heavily features clary sage and pine needles. There's even a bit of oak and jasmine thrown in for good measure. Caligna is fresh and green, but not a sharp, biting green. It's woodsy, slightly bitter, and generally enjoyable. Not one that I'd wear, but definitely one for the fig-lovers out there.

Timbuktu is the quintessential "exotic" fragrance. It has vetiver, papyrus, incense, pink pepper, and mango. It's dry, somewhat spicy, and definitely smells like some sort of market in a place like Timbuktu, or at least how I would imagine one to smell. This scent, however, lacks unique for me, at least for now. I think I'll be giving this one another go since it has such rave reviews, but it didn't wow me. It's definitely a good beginner's niche scent though, since it's quite different than the usual perfume store selection, but it isn't too bizarre like something from Etat Libre d'Orange.

And now for another Serge Lutens scent...Fille en Aiguilles. Do I know how to pronounce that? Nope. I do know, however, that this smell is very similar to another Serge Lutens offering. A lot of times when I smell perfumes, I relate them to other perfumes I know well. For example, I once described Kat Von D's Poetica perfume as the darker sister of Daisy from Marc Jacobs. In my mind, they were similar scents, but Poetica was more heavy berries and such. To me, Fille en Aiguilles is like Five O'Clock Gingembre took a week long camping trip. It retains the spices and warmth of the original, but adds a woody element, some fruity richness, and a bit of greenery. I prefer Five O'Clock, as this is a bit heavy and syrupy on me, but I can definitely appreciate where it's going.

In my search for a fresh, green scent, I came across this perfume from John Galliano called Parlez-moi d'Amour Eau Fraiche. (The original Parlez-moi d'Amour - "tell me about love" - looks very interesting too, and it's definitely on my to-sample list.) The Eau Fraiche composition truly does fit the bill of a light, breezy, sweet green scent. It's vaguely floral, fruity, green and woody all at once, and it suits it. However, I ran into a problem with this one that I also ran into with Dolce and Gabbana's L'Imperatrice; the drydown is very sour. Parlez-moi gets its sour drydown from the white currant note. (Other notes include grapefruit, jasmine, ginger, rose, and cypress.) One of my favorite scents, Féerie, contains blackcurrant, and I've heard a few times that on certain people, blackcurrant can smell a bit like, well, cat pee. I've never had that issue with blackcurrant, thankfully, but I think the grapefruit-white currant combo produced basically the same effect. While the majority of this scent was light, easy to wear, and very nice overall, the drydown was just too sour, almost acidic. (In L'Imperatrice, a similar thing occurs, but it's due to the rhubarb.) I'm going to give this scent another go though, since I actually bought a full bottle of it. It was on a deep discount, and the bottle is even more lovely in person than in pictures. It's lovely to display even if the scent doesn't work! But I'd like to make it work. Fingers crossed!

Okay, last one! This is Lys Soleia from Guerlain's Aqua Allegoria line. I'm a huge fan of these bottles (they're enormous, and the golden honeycomb design is even more stunning in person) but I have yet to fall in love with any of them. I sampled the much-loved Lys Soleia this week, and I have to say, it's pretty good. I'll have to sample it again, as I do with all scents that I don't vehemently dislike. Right now, it's a strong like, but not a love. It's a lovely bouquet of lily, tuberose, ylang-ylang and palm leaves, with some vanilla and tropical fruits to make it not entirely floral. If I had one word to describe this, it would me creamy. It's an almost milky lily scent, and of course tuberose is quite creamy on its own, and vanilla and ylang-ylang are very smooth and sweet as well. I was expecting the lily to smell a bit greener and more fresh, but I like this. At this point, though, I own a lot of white floral scents, and this one doesn't seem like a necessary addition to my collection, lovely as the bottle is and as nice as the scent is. I will happily use my sample up though, and I will also definitely recommend this to anyone who is looking for a creamy floral scent, as there aren't too many. (And those that are tend to be fronted by tuberose, so the slightly subtler tuberose in this is nice.)

I hope you all enjoyed this massive fragrance post! Now I just need to decide what to wear to bed tonight.

August 15th

Work was long today, and it's gonna be long tomorrow too. But then I have Monday off! And then very soon I get to go see Brad! I am so, so excited! Right now I'm about to sleep, except a certain orange kitty cat has usurped my pillow. It's so hard to tell him to move, he's just so peaceful and cute!

August 14th

Such a long day! Caroline's gone until November (sniff), and Cas and I both went to the doctor today!

So, Colorfy. I've been going through the animal category lately, but I'm excited to try out the others! Especially the mandalas. Here's a cat I did last night, to give you guys an idea of what the app is like.

August 13th

It's Caroline's last night at home before she heads off for college! She just introduced me to an app called Colorfy, which looks super relaxing. It's like a point-and-click coloring book, but super intricate, like with mandalas and stuff. Yay!

August 12th

I'm catching up on all of the current Steven Universe episodes tonight since I don't work tomorrow. I only have ten or so left, and they're only ten minutes each, so I'm getting close to the end! New episodes don't come out until September, boo.

Upcoming perfume reviews: Caligna and Timbuktu, both by L'Artisan Parfumeur.

August 11th

It's totally hitting me that my little sister is leaving for college in two days. I'm going to miss her so much! It's crazy to think that she's 18 now and heading off to school...hell, I was in her place during my first year writing this blog. And that was five years ago! I'm getting old. I'm just glad I get to go see her off before she leaves. I feel like I'm gonna cry! I really love that kid.

In other news, I also really love Steven Universe.

August 10th

I'm having an off evening. I'm not in the best mood, I'm sleepy, I'm sad, I feel like I'm disappointing myself and other people. Work wasn't fun today. It just felt really somber. I really dislike not feeling like myself, and I just want to be cheery again.

So, now it's off to bed and then back to work bright and early tomorrow. I hope you all have a lovely evening and a wonderful day tomorrow!

August 9th

The more I think about it, the more I want to move to Ireland. I'd really like to live there someday.

Last night involved a lot of Steven Universe, but tonight will involve going to bed early. I'm tired, and a crazy storm kept waking me up. Hopefully work is pleasant tomorrow!

Now, to check on my nekos.

August 8th

Welp, I thought I worked at 9 tomorrow morning but I actually don't work until 3 in the afternoon. I'm okay with this. So I'm watching Steven Universe. I'm super excited because the exciting backstory that everyone hypes up so much is starting to come about, and I'm so curious about it all. The show is a lot like Adventure Time, really. They both start of goofy and seem a bit inane. There's singing and a quirky theme song. The animation style is a bit bizarre. But as it progresses, the characters get some real depth, and there's legitimate plot development, and currently a lot of intrigue. I've been enjoying it, even though it took a few episodes to get me interested. (Like Adventure Time.)

Today I sampled one of the Serge Lutens "bell jar" fragrances, which are quite expensive and hard to come by. I was intrigued by the notes and description of this one though, so I bought a sample awhile back and finally got around to wearing it.

This beauty is called De profundis, from the Latin phrase De profundis clamavi, or "From the depths I cried." If that along with the look of the perfume itself doesn't intrigue you, I don't know what to tell you. De profundis opens with one of the most beautiful soil tincture and green compositions I've ever smelt. Normally, a fragrance that smells like, well, dirt, is off-putting, but this smelled like so much more. It was like sitting in grass, with yellow dandelions all around you. If you pulled a dandelion out of the ground and smelled it - its flower, the dirt clinging to its roots, the greenery of the stem - that was how this smelled. This perfume is based around chrysanthemum, so I'm guessing that was the flower I was smelling. There's meant to be a lot of violet in this too, but I never got that. The cool, green vibe quickly turned into something very conflicting - it turned warm. It was if one of Lutens' oriental spicy perfumes was seeping in, like Chergui or Five o'clock au Gingembre. I loved the initial coolness of this, but when it turned warm and almost spicy while still smelling green and earthen, it was bizarre and unlikable. It may have been the plum blossom, I'm not sure. I was hoping the incense note would come and save the day - really, I was hoping this perfume would be some earthen violet incense scent. (The bottle sure makes it look like it would be.) But fresh green flowers mixed with a warm and honeyed sweetness along the lines of Chergui was just not appealing to me. I'm sure if you're one of the people who gets a lot of violet and incense out of this, it's quite lovely. But on my skin, it didn't work out.

August 7th

No work tomorrow, so I'm finishing off season three of Orange is the New Black! All the things I've heard were well done this season are starting to happen, one of which got slightly spoiled for me unfortunately, so I know what's coming...and I'm not sure if that makes it better or worse. I got a bit emotional when I realized what was happening. It sure is funny how that shows plays with your emotions, and who you like and who you don't, and how easily that can change. It really is a brilliant show, I can't recommend it enough.

I've also started playing Neko Astume. It's a free app and I implore you to download it. It's in Japanese but it's super easy to figure out - and there's a tutorial here. It's basically a game where you set out toys in your backyard and kawaii nekos (ie cute kitties) come and play! It's adorable and relaxing and super fun, but also super chill. Check it out.

August 6th

Time for some fragrance reviews!

Another lovely scent from Serge Lutens, this is Chergui. This is a sweet tobacco scent, with honey, amber, hay, incense, sandalwood, and of course tobacco. Honey and tobacco are the main players here, and this is definitely a very rich, full, and sweet scent. It's a lot smoother than some other tobacco scents I've tried, like L'artisan's Tea for Two. It's seamlessly blended, and despite being quite a sweet and heavy scent, it doesn't feel like it's weighing me down, and applied in moderation, it's not cloying, even in the summer. I also completely love the drydown on this one! Since I already have two scents that I would consider similar to this one, I don't find any need for it in my collection, but for those looking for a tobacco scent, this is definitely one I would recommend. It's completely unisex, and is sweet without being too sweet. (Lovers of Tom Ford's Tobacco Vanille, I'm looking at you!) Since we're going into autumn here in the States, now is the ideal time to give this beauty a try.

I also tried out Annick Goutal's Ambre Fétiche, and really enjoyed this one as well. It's a very intense, heavy smell with amber, incense, leather, benzoin, vanilla, labdanum, styrax and patchouli. Luckily, despite this being very rich and quite heavy, the leather and incense took it from being too weighty and cloying to slightly drier and quite pleasant. It's an intimidating scent, no doubt. It has some heavy-hitters in the note pyramid, and this one is less suitable for summer. However, something about it is very reminiscent of Tauer's Lonestar Memories. It's slightly smoky, dry, and despite its fullness, also easy to wear. Again, this one is definitely unisex. As it draws closer to the winter months, I'm looking forward to finishing up my decant. I can only imagine this smells incredible in colder weather.

August 5th

So I didn't fall asleep for ages last night, and then I woke up every hour until my alarm went off. That was fun. I took a nap after work though, which involved some very strange dreams, including YouTubers such as Markiplier and Zoella. What?

I have yet to eat dinner and I am hungry, so I'm going to do that. Upcoming perfume reviews: Chergui by Serge Lutens and Ambre Fétiche by Annick Goutal.

August 4th

It's another early morning tomorrow, so I'm off to bed! I'm trying to decide which perfume to wear though. I spritzed some of my Sugar Plum perfume in the air earlier and I think I'm still catching whiffs of it. It's definitely not the right time of year to be wearing that one, so I'll have to give it a go around Christmas time.

So this is Very Hollywood Sparkling by Michael Kors, the flanker/EDT version of Very Hollywood, which I've written about it the past. Despite not having gardenia like the original, it smells extremely similar to it. I think if I wore one on each wrist I could probably tell the difference, but just smelling this alone, it gives of the same powdery/musky white floral vibe as the original, and instead of a slight hint of raspberry near the beginning, it has blackcurrant- though I didn't really notice it. I think I'll be testing this one again, possibly side-by-side with Very Hollywood, to see the difference. I've got a big ol' bottle of Very Hollywood though, so I don't feel any rush to buy this one. (Plus, I like the bottle for Very Hollywood a lot better. VH Sparkling looks a little tacky.)

August 3rd

Hi gorgeous humans! I went back through the past couple of months and tagged all of my fragrance review posts, so now you can look through them all in one place! Check it out!

My sunburn feels unpleasant and I have to wake up stupidly early tomorrow. On the plus side, I bought a new Urban Decay palette for the first time in many, many months, and I'm super excited! I felt like I needed some new colors in my life. There are some colors in here that are nothing at all like anything I own, so I couldn't resist!

August 2nd

Howdy! Horseback riding was so much fun today! It was super peaceful, and my horse (Mavis) was a total sweetheart. One of my stirrups was a little wonky, but hey. These things happen. My ass is sore and I have a sunburn (I used so much sunscreen, dammit!) but it was a good time nonetheless! Plus I got to hang out with my friends, which is always a good time.

August 1st

Happy August! Tomorrow is horseback riding! Then I see Brad soon! I'm excited!
