March 19th
I just got back from seeing Beauty and the Beast, and I really enjoyed it! (Don't worry, no spoilers here!) Unfortunately my nearby theatre was only showing it in 3D so I have a little bit of a headache/sore eyes thing going on. (I also just don't like seeing 3D movies most of the time...I prefer 2D. Unless it's Avatar.) Everyone in the theatre was respectful though so aside from the eye strain, no complaints about the experience. The movie was good too, thank goodness! I don't think it's "better" than the original, but I do enjoy how it elaborates on some things that the original did not. The new movie is about two hours and ten minutes long, so there was certainly time to add in more details. There are also a few new songs, most of which are quite short. The Beast does get a song - not the same song he got in the Broadway rendition - which I really enjoyed. Overall the casting was done really well. I think Gaston and Le Fou were excellent together, and I really enjoyed Kill the Beast. (It was actually probably my favorite song, oddly enough.) I think most of the tweaks were good, and even the more drastic changes (like the incorporation of a new character and some backstory) were well-done. The CGI was great and I think the costuming ought to win an award, seriously. It added so much depth. I'm not sure that I'll go see it again, but I did like it. If you like the original animated movie, I think it's worth your time to see this one.
