March 31st

You know the Kids Choice Awards are rigged when Harry Potter loses to the Alvin and the Chipmunks sequel. Also note that Dan Radcliffe and Emma Watson missed out on favorite actor/actress to...get ready...Adam Sandler and Kristen Stewart. Does anyone actually like Adam Sandler anymore? He hasn't had a good movie in like 15 years. I've given up on him. And we all know that Kristen Stewart, master of one facial expression, couldn't out-act a rock if she tried. I'm not saying that Dan and Emma are the BEST ACTORS EVER or anything, I'm just saying that they're better than their a lot.

March 30th

Oh man, I have so much to do this weekend. I wanted to get a lot done tonight, but I feel like I've been sedated or something. My eyelids won't stay open and I just wanna cuddle up in bed and sleep. I'm home this weekend though, so that's nice. I'm excited to get my hair cut tomorrow. I gotta get rid of this puffiness atop my head.

March 29th

Hello! I'm in the middle of writing an essay, so I'm just going to leave you with a funny video. Watch the whole thing, it's great.

March 28th

Whee, I'm getting my hair cut this weekend! It's gotten all poofy and unruly and weird again. Short hair may require just as much maintenance as long hair...just different kinds. But I do love it. I love that I don't have to spend an hour straightening it in the mornings, and that I can shower at night without waking up with gross looking hair. But my god, it requires a lot of product. Pomade has become my new best friend. That's okay though. Remember that time Alan Rickman sang about pomade in Sweeney Todd? Me too.

March 27th

Good evening! Nothing quite soothes the soul like listening to some good symphonic rock. Any rock music that can add in organs and violins and trumpets and all that is just brilliant. It's even better when you've got a leading female who is a soprano trained in opera. That's my kind of music right there. Bands for you to check out: Nightwish, Within Temptation, and Leaves' Eyes. Leaves' Eyes sometimes has one of those guys who does that guttural grunting/screaming/singing thing though, which isn't something I like, but um...yeah. That's a thing.

March 26th

I am stressed. I suddenly have a ton of things to do and not enough time. So I want to let you all know that my blog entries for the next week or so might be a bit brief since I don't have enough time to write proper, decent entries. I'll still pop in every day and say something, but don't expect too much. Just an update here and there or a YouTube video or something. Cheers!

March 25th: A Doctor Who Appreciation Post

I stayed up all night watching Doctor Who. Literally all night. I'm rewatching all the episodes in order (the episodes since the reboot that is, not since the 1960's) and last night I finished the first season (or as the British say, series). Among a lot of Whovians the first series is the least popular because the Doctor during that season is pretty abrasive and kind of an asshole at times, and especially at the start of the series, the episodes aren't really that great. If you started watching the show for the first time with the first episode, you'd probably not want to tune in next week. But halfway through the season it's like there's this change and everything clicks and suddenly the characters are better and the plots are cleverer and it's not just a rude alien and his chav companion running around for no reason. I have not seen every single episode of the ones made since the reboot in 2005, so that's why I wanted to start from the beginning. I wanted to better understand the characters and fall in love with them. I was never a massive fan of Rose, but watching her story line from the start is making me like her more.

If any of you are interested in watching the show, I can't tell you where to start. Everyone gets into it in a different way and while everyone has their own opinion about what the best first episode to watch is, and mine isn't the same as everyone else's. The first episode I ever saw (which I just finished watching) is called New Earth and while there are a few things that might not make sense to new viewers, it's quite good plot-wise. It was only my first episode because I'd been hearing about the show for ages and noticed it on TV one day, and the episode happened to be New Earth.

I think the show is exceptionally hard to explain and no synopsis does it justice. I wouldn't have started watching the show based solely on the plot description. There are two things that made me want to watch, the first of which is this quote by Matt Smith, the actor who is currently playing the Doctor:
“That’s what interests me about The Doctor because, actually, look at the blood on the man’s hands. 900 years, countless very selfish choices, and he’s literally blown planets up. His own race, you know, that’s all on his hands. Which is why I think he has to make silly jokes and wear a fez. Because if he didn’t, he’d hang himself.”

That quote made me stop and think. It made me consider that maybe this isn't just a sci-fi show about aliens and spaceships, that is was a show with emotions and fascinatingly deep characters.
The second thing was a piece of music that showed up on my Tumblr dashboard the day after the 2010 Christmas Special episode. It was a song that had been in the episode and I noticed there were lyrics listed, and that confused me. I didn't think the show was some sort of musical, so I decided to listen. What I heard was one of the most gloriously beautiful songs ever, and this made me think, "Wow, this isn't some ordinary TV show. If it can produce a song like this, then it's something special." Here is that song, called Abigail's Song, song by the legendary Katherine Jenkins and written by Murray Gold:

And so I started watching the show, and I fell in love. Undoubtedly there are some poorly constructed episodes, some weird characters, some things I don't like. But the show as a whole is absolutely brilliant and I'm so glad I found it.

March 24th

So who else thinks we're diving into a terrifying political dystopian future? Because I do. The Republican candidates are absolutely scary. The fact that they equate not having Christianity as the one and only religion to being oppressed and attacked is worrying. I'm all for freedom of religion, but I do not think Christian politics should rule any country. That would eliminate many other people's freedom of religion, which apparently these Christian Republicans are worried about - but only if they're personal religion is at stake. They couldn't care less about other religions because they're too stupid and scared to explore the possibility that they could be wrong.

/End rant

March 23rd: The Hunger Games review

I just got back from seeing The Hunger Games and I wanted to get my initial thoughts out now. As someone who has read the book multiple times, I was able to detect the discrepancies between the book and film, and I want to discuss that as well as some other aspects.

One of the greatest differences between the book and film is that since the film is not exclusively from Katniss' point of view, there is freedom to explore other areas besides District 12 and the arena, such as the Capitol and its inner workings. I thought this was a fantastic addition because it gave much more depth than just one point of view, and it gave insight into the Capitol without having to explain much, which is great in filmmaking.

The other differences are all fairly minor and make sense from a filmmaking point of view, such as Katniss' acquisition of her mockingjay pin and the exclusion of Madge. (Including her would have required backstory unnecessary for advancing the plot.) Another difference was the appearance of the Muttations, which admittedly was slightly disappointing but also understandable. I also felt that Haymitch's character lacked the depth it had in the book, and that he was used more as comic relief than anything else.

Other critiques of the film are very minor, and include subpar (in my opinion) special effects in some areas (Katniss fire costumes, to be specific) as well as some mediocre acting on the part of Josh Hutcherson. I thought he was just okay and didn't really add as much to Peeta's character as I'd hoped for. Another technical concern was some of the camera techniques, specifically fast action sequences. I felt that, especially during the fight on the Cornucopia, the was too much rapid motion and blurriness to actually tell what was happening.

Some praise for the film would be its great, spine-tingling score, the amazing Capitol costumes, and Jennifer Lawrence, Amandla Stenberg (Rue), and Willow Shields (Primrose). What was great about them is that they were very skilled in portraying raw emotion without seeming fake, and it seemed like they really embraced the psyche of their characters. Other characters that were enjoyable were Effie, Caesar Flickerman, Gale (which surprised me, since I'm not a huge fan of Liam's other work), Seneca Crane, and President Snow. And speaking of Seneca Crane, I found his implied death to be absolutely one of the greatest scenes in the film. It was very powerful and I really appreciated how it was put together.

Overall I think the film was well-done and serves as a good companion to the book. It is nothing extraordinary, but it is a very successful adaptation and I am looking forward to Catching Fire!

March 22nd

I just had a moment of clarity and realized I probably won't be back in my room until after the movie, so I should blog now. Thinking ahead sure is great! I'm also notoriously bad at leaving the house for the night without having blogged first, so I've got a Blogger app and all that, but this is so much better.

So! Time to get ready for tonight! I've got a lot to do! SSA Meeting, Hunger Games, and various things in and around that! Here's hoping the movie is good. Fingers crossed!

March 21st

It's basically 24 hours until The Hunger Games. I could pee my britches with joy.
Speaking of britches-peeing, here is a hilarious montage of classic game show moments.

March 20th

Today I went grocery shopping. I bought soda and cookies and Kit Kats and Monster trail mix. Whoops. It's okay though, I bought applesauce too. And low fat yogurt! That balances out, right?

I want it to be Thursday. I don't like Wednesdays. I have too many classes and nothing fun and oh did I mention The Hunger Games midnight premiere on Thursday oh my goooooood.

Oh Murray Gold, your music is in my head again.

March 19th

Happy half-birthday to my dad!

Big Brother is kind of ridiculous. The girls are really obnoxious though, except for one. The guys are mostly decent.

So right now I just want to eat Thin Mints and get new contacts. Also for this weather to become normal again because I do not like getting caught outside in a torrential downpour thunderstorm.

March 18th

If you watch The Amazing Race, you may be familiar with Team Brenchel. They were both on Big Brother 12 and had a "showmance," and now in TAR, Rachel is this massive crybaby who makes everything overly dramatic and a sobfest. So I thought it would be interesting to check out what she was like on Big Brother, since I've never watched the show before and it's on YouTube. I really like the idea of the show (24-hour surveillance, challenges to compete for things like food and nice beds, saboteurs, etc.) but my god, Rachel is ridiculous! She and Brendon mostly just make out and she shakes her enormous boobs all over the place. There are some people on the show I like though and it's pretty interesting, so I'll probably try and finish the season. We'll see.

March 17th

Happy Saint Patrick's Day! I, being the typical college student that I am, chose to stay in and watch The Luck of the Irish (yes, the Disney Channel movie) instead of going out to drink and party. I'm currently listening to Celtic bagpipes, as well! I have both Irish Catholic and Irish Protestant blood in me, so I'm big into anything that celebrates Irish heritage! (I know Saint Patrick's Day is a Catholic thing, but I'm gonna show off all my Irishness today.)

Anyway, I'm completely stuffed from the pizza I made myself (so Irish!) so I'm just chilling now. I'm so damn cool, huh?

March 16th

All of my internet browsers keep crashing. I even tried using Safari. My typical browser, Chrome, becomes unresponsive at the site of YouTube or Twitter and just dies. So I'm blogging now because I'm worried Blogger might fail me later, so better safe than sorry! I think I'll read A Game of Thrones and just forget about the internet for awhile.

March 15th

I'm listening to the Wicked soundtrack with Alison and Sarah! One week ago exactly I was seeing it in New York...and I can't believe it. It seems like it was so much more recent! Like...four days ago. Not that a week is such a long time but...still. I miss New York. School is dumb, y'all.

March 14th

I had a nightmare that it was like 11:45 at night and I hadn't blogged. This blog is infiltrating my dreams now, you guys! I can't imagine missing a day of blogging. I would cry a million tears. Sigh.

Today is my 800th entry! I can't believe it! 800 days of blogging. That's crazy. Here's to 800 more!

I ate a huge dinner and I feel full and awful. So I'm going to watch Britain's Next Top Model and then sleep. :)

March 13th

Quickie blog tonight because I'm tired and want to get to bed! Today was pretty uneventful, so not much to report. I hope y'all had a good time though!

March 12th

School. Ugh.

I caught up on The Amazing Race tonight...whew. This was like the most dramatic, bitchy, whiny episode ever. I just wanted to slap everyone. And then Art and JJ were so nice at the end and I was basically crying and it was a really touching moment. Next week looks like it'll be a really good episode though, so I'm excited! They're going to Bavaria!

For some reason I've had Hellfire from The Hunchback of Notre Dame stuck in my head for a few days now. I didn't even like that movie a lot. It was all right and the songs were pretty good, but overall it's kinda meh. But I've been dancing around my room singing Hellfire all day and chanting ominous Latin phrases and I'm sure if anyone could see me, the would think I was crazy. I am crazy, though, let's be honest.

March 11th

Tumblr has been fun recently. Every time Snape shows up on my dashboard my hearts does a little flutter because I remember that 48 hours ago I was in the presence of Alan Rickman, shaking his hand, even. I can't really wrap my brain around it, to be honest.

So I guess class starts tomorrow or whatever...I'm definitely not in the mood for school right now. I need a day of relaxation, please! My day today was spent cleaning and unpacking and then packing for school and doing laundry and I'm just not in the mood to wake up tomorrow morning! At least the weather is really pleasant.

March 10th

Last night was perfect. Well, actually it was freezing and I couldn't feel my hands or feet. But it was still perfect. Seminar was fantastic. Everyone cheered when Alan came on and I was just sitting there in disbelief. Like, wow, I'm watching Alan Rickman perform. Right now. So then the show ends and I knock over all the bitches in my way (err, what?) to get a good spot at the barricade by the stage door. I was about the sixth person out there, and was at the front of the barricade. I chatted with the ladies next to me, one named Kate and the other Ashley, who were both super lovely and fun. Jerry O'Connell and Hamish Linklater came around and signed our Playbills first while Alan was on the other side. Then Alan comes by and I'm like what the actual fuck it's Alan Rickman. So I told him I liked the show and he said thank you, and then the girl next to me asked for a hug and he declined but said he was open to handshakes, so I shook his hand. So basically, I met Alan Rickman and we touched. Ugh. No words can describe. My awesome dad was on the other side of the barricade and was nice enough to take a picture of me chatting with Alan. I'll post the picture below! Anyway, overall it was amazing and perfect and oh my god I met Alan Rickman. Oh my god.

Yup. It was perfect.

Friday, March 9, 2012

March 9th

I'm currently in the Golden Theatre. 30 minutes until Alan comes out. Two hours until I'm at the stage door meeting him. One of the actresses passed me while I was going into the theatre, so that's cool. All right, phone off, time to FREAK OUT!

Thursday, March 8, 2012

March 8th

Oh my god. I'm currently sitting in the second row of the Gershwin Theatre, about to see Wicked. I can't believe it. My dad and I both entered the ticket lottery so I would have better odds, which was great because out of over 100 people, 15 names got called. Anyway, gotta turn my phone off now, ciao!

March 7th

I'm finally in New York City! Oh my god!

The plane ride was blissfully average. I listened to MuggleCast as per usual (I get motion sickness if I read/watch movies/close my eyes so the only thing I can do on planes is listen to music or podcasts) and stared blankly out the window. It was a really sunny and clear day today so I had a lovely view of the cityscape as we landed, so that was nice.

I went out to dinner at some fancy place with my dad and a colleague/friend of his and just got back to the room about an hour ago, so I'm super tired. I have to get up tomorrow and go exploring, so I'm probably going to go to bed here pretty shortly. Tomorrow night I'm going to do the lottery rush for Wicked, so wish me luck!

Tuesday, March 6, 2012

March 6th

Twelve hours until my flight! What!!! I still can't even really believe it. Also, there are quite a few tickets left for Wicked on Thursday which means I'll probably be successful in rushing it and ahhh that's so exciting! Also, it's four months until my birthday! Everything is happening!

So I got my manicure today, and I ended up getting this really nice golden color - here's what it looks like on the nails of a stranger I found on the internet:

The manicure was really fun and the guy that did my nails was hilarious. The only drawback was the lotion he smelled like weed and bananas. Not my favorite.

March 5th

It's this week. I can't believe it. I can't wrap my head around it. I tried on my dress with my heels and coat tonight. I'm gonna be the hottest mofo to ever see Seminar. I also tried on the sweater I bought from Forever 21, and it is amazing! I didn't have the chance to try it on at the store because the line was about 100 people long, so I just bought it and hoped for the best - success! I'll be wearing that on Thursday....and probably Friday morning too. No point in bringing a ton of clothes on a four-day trip.
I snooped around on Nordstrom's website and found my dress, so I'd like to show you all what it looks like!

Sunday, March 4, 2012

March 4th

Okay, no pictures. To be honest, it didn't even cross my mind. Today was spent doing laundry and hanging out with various family members. I had a lovely time sleeping last night at my mom's though, because my wonderful cats slept with me - Ellie actually slept on my back. What a crazy fool.

I'm watching a show on Bio right now called "I Survived" and one of the stories is about a winter plane crash. Good thing I'm going on a plane on Wednesday. I'm sort of terrified now but it's one of those things where you really want to know what happens so you can't stop watching.

Oh man this show is getting intense. Guys, never watch this show.

You know what I don't understand? Those hands-free soap pumps. Their idea is that you shouldn't have to touch a dirty soap pump. Uhh, aren't you about to wash your hands with soap so that the germs you'd get from the pump would just get washed off? Or am I totally missing something? Sigh. Products these days.

Saturday, March 3, 2012

March 3rd

I just had an excellent shopping adventure at the Mall of America! I got a dress to wear at Seminar next week, a jacket, and super cute earrings. Hooray! I am really tired now though...I'm not used to walking around such a gargantuan mall! It was worth it, though. Maybe I'll post pictures tomorrow. :)

Friday, March 2, 2012

March 2nd

At laaaaast I'm at home and curled up in my bed. I can't believe it's spring break. In exactly one week I will be in the presence of Alan Rickman! I'm also hoping to see Wicked! And of course, I'm going out with Halia, so that will be fun.

Thursday, March 1, 2012

March 1st

Ach so! I am blogging terribly late tonight, aren't I? My apologies! I intended to get back to my room at around 9:00, study, and then go to bed early. I ended up staying at the SSA meeting until 10:30, got back to my room and had dinner, and I'm just now about to start studying. I am a mess! This bed is so cruelly comfortable, I don't know how I can be bothered to do the reading I've been assigned. I already wrote an entire essay today, what more does this school want from me?
